What is hypnosis?
- Have you ever attended the relaxation part of a yoga class?
- Have you ever been engrossed in a book or a film?
- Have you ever driven and wondered how you got to your destination, not remembering anything about your journey?
- Do you ever daydream?
- Do you ever go to sleep?
If you have answered ‘yes’ to at least one of these questions, you have been under hypnosis. Yes, we have all experienced hypnosis, and we all do at least once a day. In other words, if you have ever been in a state of deep relaxation, you have been under hypnosis. So there is nothing weird, hippie or extra-ordinary about hypnosis – we experience it every day, most of us do several times a day. It is not at all a state where we are out of control and can be manipulated. On the contrary – we are focused and fully in control and can in fact be acutely aware of what is going on in our body, in our mind and around us, of what is being said to us while at the same time not necessarily hearing exactly every word that is being said to us.
The unconscious part of our mind is incredibly powerful and is the largest and dominant part of our mind. Think of our mind as an iceberg. The tip of the iceberg is our conscious, and the rest is our unconscious. While we like to think that our actions and reactions are a result of a conscious, logical thought process, they are in fact mostly controlled by the desires of the unconscious, which determines not only our behaviour and emotions, but also pain and illness. This is why even though we know we should stop smoking, eat less, remain calm, be pain-free etc., if the unconscious does not want you to change (whatever the reason might be), it will continue your problem.
Hypnosis will help you find out what the reason behind this apparent contradiction is. It is indeed widely accepted as an excellent method by which we access our unconscious and therefore our inner potential – this is where most of our habits and emotions originate, so this is where most aspects of our lives can be changed. It is the most beneficial state to make changes within your body, your biochemistry and your mind, in order to bring about the changes you want to achieve in your life.
The state of mind you are in when in hypnosis may be brought about either by yourself (self-hypnosis) or with the help of another person. But in any case, all hypnosis is self-hypnosis, that is, you only go into hypnosis if you are willing to do so and decide to ‘relax into relaxation’, as it were. Therefore you will never do what you would not want to do in a conscious, completely awake state. A hypnotherapist cannot make you do or say things that you do not want to do or say, for example reveal your deepest secrets or information that you do not want to share, or run around like a headless chicken. In hypnosis, perhaps even more so than in a ‘waking’ state, the human mind is very much aware of what it wants and does not want and will only accept a suggestion which it wholeheartedly accepts. The therapist has no control over that, therefore has no control over the client.

What is hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy is a form of short therapy that addresses the client’s subconscious mind in order to bring about the desired change. The hypnotherapist often enlists the power of the client’s own imagination and may utilise a wide range of techniques, from the indirect approach using metaphors (the way Milton Erickson did) to the use of direct suggestions for positive change.
What is Neuro-Linguistic Programming?
This refers to the brain and the nervous system and how our experience is received and processed through the five senses: visual (eyes), auditory (ears), kinaesthetic (feeling/touch), olfactory (smell) and gustatory (taste).
These are the language and non-verbal communication systems through which our neural representations are coded, ordered and given meaning. This again includes pictures, sounds, feelings, tastes and smells, but also words (internal dialogue).
The ability to really discover, utilise and change the programmes we run in our neurological systems (our communication to ourselves and to others) in order to achieve our specific desired outcomes.
In other words, NLP is all about how to use the language of the mind to consistently achieve our desired goals.

What is Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), or tapping?
EFT was developed in the 1990s by Gary Craig, who based his theories on the work carried out by Dr Roger Callahan (a clinical psychologist) in the late 1970s/early 1980s. Dr Callahan called his technique Thought Field Therapy (TFT), having discovered that by moving the body’s energy in specific ways, distressing emotions could by eliminated, without the use of drugs or any other invasive means.
EFT is based on a combination of Chinese medicine, clinical psychology and the body’s energy system. By tapping various points at the end of the body’s meridians, problems can be eliminated in a short time, without years of therapy.

It is one of the many techniques that I use as a hypnotherapist to help clients achieve what they want.
What is Integral Eye Movement Therapy?
IEMT stands for Integral Eye Movement Therapy. If you suffer from, for example, anxiety, stress, anger, insomnia, if you have self-confidence issues, food issues, guilt issues, identity issues, if you have a phobia or if you suffered trauma or even have ever had PTSD (Post-traumatic Stress Disorder), IEMT can help (though not if you suffer from epilepsy or schizophrenia).
IEMT is a short therapy, based on how our neurology interacts with emotional imprinting and identity imprinting, that involves helping to release emotions linked to particular events or experiences. It is a wonderful, quick, practical way to help you manage your emotions. It uses a variety of techniques to help you change your emotional state, to help you change how you feel about these events or/and experiences. I use these techniques with you, and then you can use them yourself if you need to. Very much like hypnotherapy and NLP, IEMT is about empowering YOU to make the necessary changes. With this method, you are invited to get inside the problem and then work your way outside it all by yourself. No guidance, no suggestion – YOU have the answers. Indeed, as an IEMT practitioner, just as a hypnotherapist and NLP practitioner, I do not fix or treat your problem – I just facilitate the change in you.
This method is truly amazing. One minute you have an emotion, the next you don’t, or it is so small that it does not bother you any more. This can be an emotion about the past but also about the future. These changes can be immediate (one session may well be all you need) and are long-lasting. You will finally be able to feel that you have moved forward and are no longer imprisoned by your issues. Having experienced it and experimented with it myself, I know how powerful it can be.
If you have a look at the website (below) and watch the videos that Andrew Austin, the founder of the method, has produced, it will look like the person is being ‘stage-hypnotised’ (stage hypnosis being very different from the type of hypnosis that hypnotherapists use, making people look silly and gullible, which is why a lot of people thinking about seeing a hypnotherapist are not sure that it is safe and trustworthy), but it is not the case. It is all about changing your eye pattern when you think about or feel that particular emotion you want to be free from, such as anxiety.
As Andrew Austin says, ‘The process explores the question, “How did we learn to feel the way that we feel?” and opens up the possibility of creating the appropriate change in our emotional lives.’ In terms of identity imprinting, it also explores the question, ‘How did we learn to be this way?’.
